If we reject God then we've rejected the only possible source of real purpose. Our human nature demands that we live a life worth living and things that have no purpose have no worth. Therefore, if we reject God, we must at least try to obtain a feeling of having a purpose. So you may be asking how we can deceive ourselves into thinking we have real purpose when we don't. Self deception is really a topic for Y!A psychology. The primary answer would be to keep busy so we don't have the time to think about a purposeless existence.
