A swimming pool, swimming bath, wading pool, or simply a pool, is a container filled with water intended for swimming or water-based recreation. There are many standard sizes; the largest and deepest is the Olympic-size swimming pool. A pool can be built either above or in the ground, and from materials such as metal, plastic, fiberglass or concrete. Pools that may be used by many people or by the general public are called public, while pools used exclusively by a few people or in a home are called private. Many health clubs, fitness centers and private clubs have public pools used mostly for exercise. Many hotels and massage parlors have public pools for relaxation. Hot tubs and spas are pools with hot water, used for relaxation or therapy, and are common in homes, hotels, clubs and massage parlors. Swimming pools are also used for diving and other water sports, as well as for the training of lifeguards and astronauts. Chemical disinfectants such as chlorine, bromine or mineral sanitizers, and additional filters are often used in swimming pools to prevent growth and spread of bacteria, viruses, algae and insect larvae. Alternatively, pools can be made without chemical disinfectants by using a biofilter with additional carbon filters and UV disinfection. In both cases, pools need to be fitted with an adequate flow rate. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do you get custard out of a swimming pool ? Q. On Brainiac a while back they filled up a swimming pool with 'custard' in order to prove that it was possible to walk on a non-Newtonian liquid - all you have to do is keep walking. But how did they ever get the 'custard' (it wasn't stuff you could eat) out of the pool afterwards ? Or is it still there ? Is there a pool somewhere in England that will be forever full of custard ? Answered by V8MAN - Sat Dec 23 16:22:00 2006 I want to convert a large chlorinated swimming pool into a pool for fish. Will ammonia work? Q. I've heard that ammonia will neutralize the chlorine, and I think that's what people use to treat tap water for fishtanks. But are there other chemicals in swimming pool water? Also, how much ammonia (or whatever chemical) do I need to use? The type of fish doesn't matter--it can be any species. I just don't want them to die. As one previous poster has said, you can let your pool water just sit, the chlorine will dissapate over time, especially in sunny conditions.. it may take a week or 2 weeks or longer... it all depends on the situation. Test your pool water often to check the chlorine levels. You can go to a pool store, and you can buy a chlorine neutralizer. however you might spend a little money for this, as if you have a large 3000 gallon pool, it may take a few containers of the chemical. Even after getting a zero reading on the chlorine, i would still wait a week or 10 days after this to make sure that the chlorine is completely dissapated. Q. We are trying to reduce the water capacity of our swimming pool. Is there a way to do this besides filling the pool with cement? Asked by J.B - Mon Jun 30 22:50:35 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Any solid object will displace water. Such as a tanning ledge, in pool bar w/ stools, etc. You may also consider cutting out the side skimmer & lowering it. In a concrete pool, this would require tiling the perimeter approx. 3 inches below the new lower level. Answered by Pool Gal - Tue Jul 1 08:38:02 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Swimming pool" Smile!
