CanadaDefinition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary (Redirected from canada) Jump to: navigation, search See also Canadá, and Ca-na-đaFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Canada ( / ˈ k æ n ə d ə /) is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area. Canada's common border with the United States to the south and northwest is the longest in the world. The land occupied by Canada was inhabited for millennia by various groups of Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French expeditions explored, and later settled, along the Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom. This widening autonomy was highlighted by the Statute of Westminster of 1931 and culminated in the Canada Act of 1982, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the British parliament. A federation consisting of ten provinces and three territories, Canada is governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is a bilingual nation with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. One of the world's highly developed countries, Canada has a diversified economy that is reliant upon its abundant natural resources and upon trade—particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and complex relationship. It is a member of the G8, G-20, NATO, OECD, WTO, Commonwealth, Francophonie, OAS, APEC, and UN. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I'd like to know if there are any differneces in the lifestyle of Canada as opposed to the US. Here in the US people always seem to be stressed out about work and finances. Of course there is always that stigma that Americans are rude. However, I've heard that people in Canada are much nicer. So I'm wondering if the quality of life in Canada is different, or is it just basically the same? Asked by average joe - Tue Mar 16 15:49:01 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. In Canada it's harder to start a business and be entrepreneurial but easier to pursue the arts because the government subsidizes art there. In Canada you pay higher taxes but you get something back for it; schools, medical care and a decent retirement plan. In the US most of your tax money goes to support the military and you have to pay for school and medical care out of your own pocket. In some places you also have to pay separately for garbage removal, police and fire services (on TOP of the local tax you've already paid). Plus in the US unless you work for the government you have no guaranteed sick leave, no maternity leave and no pension plan. Americans have to plan everything for themselves and finance it out of what they earn… [cont.] Answered by ironica - Tue Mar 16 16:03:03 2010 Canada is a west east country trying to survive in a north south continent. What does it mean? Q. It might be because the US has more varied temperatures than Canada because Canada is more narrow and stretches west to east but i think it has something to do with Canada's landform regions. Thank you. Asked by Hiba A - Sat Oct 18 19:21:23 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The geography is very similar. The Rockies are in the same place, the most fertile land is in the same place, between the Rockies and the Great Lakes. The only major difference is the Canadian Shield, which limits agriculture in the East, but it makes up for it with easy access to minerals. I stand by my first answer. Climate limits development to the north so it has to spread east-west. Answered by Elmyr - Sat Oct 18 19:59:21 2008 How would Canada be different if there had been no immigration?
Q. If the early "founding peoples" (The First Nations, The English, and The French) had not immigrated, how would Canada be different? Asked by Lynn - Sun Feb 28 13:47:53 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Who knows. It could be better, worse, or the same. I wonder what any country would be like if there were no invasions, colonizations, immigration, mass migrations, settling of itinerant cultures, etc. However, there would not be many of the good things we have today in the world, if it were not for immigration of some kind. Yes, there are some bad things too, as a result...but you gotta take that with the good.
