A swimming pool, swimming bath, wading pool, or simply a pool, is a container filled with water intended for swimming or water-based recreation. There are many standard sizes; the largest and deepest is the Olympic size. A pool can be built either above or in the ground, and from materials such as metal, plastic, fiberglass or concrete.

Pools that may be used by many people or by the general public are called public, while pools used exclusively by a few people or in a home are called private. Many health clubs, fitness centers and private clubs have public pools used mostly for exercise. Many hotels and massage parlors have public pools for relaxation. Hot tubs and spas are pools with hot water, used for relaxation or therapy, and are common in homes, hotels, clubs and massage parlors. Swimming pools are also used for diving and other water sports, as well as for the training of lifeguards and astronauts.

Chemical disinfectants such as chlorine, bromine or mineral sanitizers, and additional filters are often used in swimming pools to prevent growth and spread of bacteria, viruses, algae and insect larvae. Alternatively, pools can be made without chemical disinfectants by using a biofilter with additional carbon filters and UV disinfection. In both cases, pools need to be fitted with an adequate flow rate.

Who is responsible for the swimming pool filter when renting a home?
Q. We moved into our rental home in December 2008. Our home has an in-ground swimming pool. We had the pool professionally opened on May 7th. The pool company said the filter is broken and needs to be replaced. The cost of replacing the filter and having it installed is $1300. I contacted the home owner and she said they don't have the money to replace the filter at this time. Who is responsible for replacing the swimming pool filter? I also wanted to know if it would be OK to deduct $1300 from next months rent to pay for the filter?

A. Pool maintenance usually falls on the tenant. You are going to need to read your lease to figure out who pays for this. Most likely it is you, but your lease may state otherwise.

A. It's a very expensive proposition. First, you'll need the cooperation of a specialized pool contractor and also tile contractor- and both need to know what is being built and cooperate as best as they are able. The substrate- what the slate will adhere to is either going to have to be somewhat flexible or extra rigid- as a tile person I cannot say which. As for the tile mortar, regular polyblend white or grey should be fine- they are both rated for uderwater even though material safety data sheets do not reflect this. You will need many gallons of the flex additive, which can also be diluted with White Lightning brand 40 year caulk. Alternately you can use epoxy mortar, but this is extremely expensive. There is such a thing as… [cont.]

What color combination of swimming pool lane lines should I get?
Q. I work at a swimming pool and my boss asked for the right combination of colors. No black or white. I was thinking a brighter color at the ends like orange, red, yellow so people can see them and be prepared to do a flip turn... I'm interested in hearing your ideas!
