The term Quality of Life used by politicians and economists to measure broader social effects of policies, such as the effect that reducing graffiti or vandalism might have on the wellbeing of local residents.

Two widely known measures of a country's liveability are the Economist Intelligence Unit's quality of life index and the Mercer Quality of Living Survey. Both measures calculate the liveability of countries around the world through a combination of subjective life-satisfaction surveys and objective determinants of quality of life such as divorce rates, safety, and infrastructure. Such measures relate more broadly to the population of a city, state, or country, not to the individual level.

According to Costanza: "Quality of Life (QOL) has long been an explicit or implicit policy goal, adequate definition and measurement have been elusive. Diverse objective and subjective indicators across a range of disciplines and scales, and recent work on subjective well-being (SWB) surveys the psychology of happiness have spurred renewed interest" .

How does a cardiac defibillator affect quality of life, ability to work, etc......?
Q. My brother who is not yet 40 just had quadruple bypass surgery, and the Dr's then decided it would be best for him to also have an ICD or cadiac defibrillator. I am wondering about his quality of life with the ICD and on his chances of returning to work. He has always done fast food, or hard labor. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, do you feel better since or not?

A. The ICD isn't going to affect his quality of life in a negative way, it should actually improve it. It doesn't do anything to him, unless his heart beat becomes irregular, or stops. The "pacemaker" will keep his heart beating at a normal rhythm if it becomes irregular, and if need be the device can shook his heart back to a normal rhythm, or restart it if he does go into cardiac arrest. It can save his life. My grandfather had one put in 2 yrs ago, he's 83 and it has helped him a lot. He doesn't get light headed or dizzy like he use too because the pacemaker is keeping his heart at a normal rhythm.

How much do we need to deny ourselves to ensure a good quality of life for future generations?
Q. If mass media is to believed, the earth is falling apart at its seams thanks to the over-indulgnance of us, the present population of the globe. At the same time, billions are suffering from abject poverty and strive to gain an increased quality of life that nearly everyone reading this would turn their noses up at. If we are to help the unfortunate, while also guaranteeing not only our children but our children's children a quality of life that resembles what we have now, in what ways do you think we should cut-back or deprive ourselves today? And do you think we are capable as selfish beings to do it?

A. We could approach this question with the 'glass is half full' attitude i.e. we don't need to deprive ourselves of goods and services to help the planet, just choose them more wisely. We can choose to invest either time or money or both to help secure the ecological future of this planet. They can be things which make us feel good inside. Buy a $50,000 solar power system for your house instead of an expensive car. It will retain more value. Plant a $5.00 tree instead of buying a $5.00 magazine. If you own land cover it in trees. Trees are an asset. Install a water tank. Again it's an asset that will save you money as well by using less water from the grid. Walk to the shop, don't drive, if you only need a couple of things. You will… [cont.]

Where in the US, is life actually close to high quality. East Coast, West, South, etc?
Q. I'm from the New Jersey/New York area, and life here resembles pretty much hell. It sucks and the people aren't right in the head. I don't care what any supporter has to say of job opportunities. Money does not equal high quality of life in this hellhole. But there are still great places even here to live. However I want something more, and I can afford it, especially with my partner. So the question is, where do we move to that has the following 1)Pretty decent weather (doesn't have to be perfect) 2)Normal people who aren't shady, and dangerous, or out to get you. 3)Nice scenery instead of pollution, garbage, etc. 4)A "normal" place to raise kids and develop your own intellect. 5)A place which doesn't seem rushed and crazy. I… [cont.]

A. What you are describing really does exist, out west along the Pacific Coast. Northern California, Western Oregon and Western Washington. While all cities have problems, there are a number of smaller pleasant cities around the region that you might like. Eugene, Oregon is nice, Seattle WA is great too. Eureka California is a wonderful place. Also along Highway 101 by the Redwoods is beautiful along the coast and the weather isn t as horrible as out east, nor as rainy like the Washington Coast.
