Lifeworld (German: Lebenswelt) may be conceived as a universe of what is self-evident or given, a world that subjects may experience together. For Husserl, the lifeworld is the fundament for all epistemological enquiries. The concept has its origin in biology and cultural Protestantism.

The lifeworld concept is used in philosophy and in some social sciences, particularly sociology. The concept emphasizes a state of affairs in which the world is experienced, the world is lived (German: erlebt). The lifeworld is a pre-epistemological stepping stone for phenomenological analysis in the Husserlian tradition.

Husserl s Lebenwelt is translated into: lifeworld, life world and life-world; any difference?
Q. My first language is not English. When I read books concerning phenomenology in English, Husserl s Lebenwelt (in German) is translated into, for example : (1) the life world (Sokolowski, R., 2000) (2)the lifeworld (Van Manen. M., 1997) (3)the life-world (Moustakas, C., 1994 and Husserl s book translate by Carr, D., 1970 ) Many experts cited the original German as Lebenwelt but they translated it into different English wordings. Are these three terms viewed the same by those readers /scholars whose first languages are English? any arguement for this?

A. All 3 would be considered the same. The German word does not translate well to English. All 3 words are "strained" and never used.

A. There is no real difference in meaning. The word is an artificial construct even in German where compound nouns are much more common. There are a few stylistic usage differences, for example between American and British English where one or another of the three forms might be more common, but all would be understood to much the same extent. "Life-world" might be a better reference to the original German. I wonder why Husserl didn't use "Lebenswelt" if he meant the world in which one lives.
