What's the difference between memoir and autobiography?
Q. I may be wrong, but itt seems to me that in recent years we've been seeing more "memoirs" and fewer "autobiographies". There's certainly some overlap in meaning between these two literary forms, and it's not clear to me whether we're seeing a true change in fashion (a shift in popularity from autobiography to memoir), or simply an increase in the use of the term "memoir" for writings that in earlier times would have been labelled "autobiographies". Or is a memoir truly a different literary form than an autobiography, and we're seeing a real increase in the popularity of the memoir?

A. An autobiography is more chronological, usually covers the entire life of the author, and consists of a listing of events with some narrative around them. A memoir may be in any order, can cover an event or a time period without the rest of the life, and typically contains a theme or a point of reference from which the book springs.

A. I would highly recommend "Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman!" Richard P. Feynman lead a very interesting life and describes them all quite well in the book. At the same time, it keeps a steady line of humor thrown in every once in a while. He was often described as free spirited and eccentric.

A. Start with an interesting/exciting story about something that happened earlier in your life. A little story is a good way to start any paper. It would be boring to say "I was born on..." unless there's something extremely significant about your birthday. If something seems boring and it's something you wouldn't want to read in someone else's autobiography, then it probably shouldn't be there unless it's necessary. I would say just talk about interesting things that have happened to you. Good Luck!

A. Well, with mine, I focused on a unique event in my life that defined something about who I am. Mine begins "I died...", because I technically died once and was revived. Facing that death has had a strong influence on who I am and how I see the world. Is this a full length memoir or a short autobiography for an assignment? If this is just a short autobiography, why not start with something that is key to who you are? Do you work with the homeless? Describe it. Are you an athlete? Describe a key moment in a game and how you feel at that moment, then tell why this is important to who you are? How does it influence you and all that you do? Good luck.

A. First off, when a word starts with a vowel, you use "an" not "a". Second off, if you want to write an autobiography, you first need to figure out if your life is interesting enough that someone would actually buy and read it... and why... That'll be the basis for your plot... So where to start should be around where your "plot" began... Like if a cancer survivor wrote an autobiography, they'd probably have a brief info about life-before-cancer then 'start' with when they got sick... how they found out, etc... and go from there... An autobiography is your own life's story, so start where your life got interesting.

A. Employers will just toss your application aside if, you give an involved life story. If you ever have to employ people then you will understand. Information such as ,name age,education level,experience etc. should be covered in your resume Far better to keep it short, succinct only details should be required.I've never heard of an autobiography being needed before! Things they will to know are; What can you bring to the position/company? Why did you apply for this position? What is you best attribute? Where do you see yourself in five years?

A. Decide how much of your life you want to include. 325 words might be enough to tell about a defining moment or event in your life. Don't try to cover the "First, I was born and then I had strained peas and then I learned to walk and then I went to first grade..." Boring! Tell about something you did that you are proud of. Something you've done that others have not done. Something that caused you to make a life choice. Something you overcame. All of these things can be autobiographical in nature. An autobiography in the 3rd person looks just like a biography based on interviews without the foot notes - all the discussion should, necessarily, include your presence and if you could not have known it, like the events of being born in a street car, etc. , then you have to provide a reference to make it plausible (in my opinion) "Family tradition reports the exciting events of 13 November which resulted in the birth of Sam Jones on a street car in New Orleans.
