An autobiography (from the Greek, αὐτός-autos self + βίος-bios life + γράφειν-graphein to write) is a book about the life of a person, written by that person.

Origin of the term

The word autobiography was first used deprecatingly by William Taylor in 1797 in the English periodical, the Monthly Review, when he suggested the word as a hybrid but condemned it as 'pedantic'; but its next recorded use was in its present sense by Robert Southey in 1809. The form of autobiography however goes back to antiquity. Biographers generally rely on a wide variety of documents and viewpoints; an autobiography however may be based entirely on the writer's memory. Closely associated with autobiography (and sometimes difficult to precisely distinguish from it) is the form of memoir.

What's the difference between a professional autobiography and a personal statement?
Q. I'm applying to some PhD programs in Counseling/Psychology and some schools ask for a professional autobiography, and others ask for a personal statement. I've looked into different forums and books, but they don't really state the difference. What's the difference, specifically?

A. A professional autobiography consists of your academic and professional achievements. A personal statement consists of your outlook on certain subjects, such as how you decided that you want to earn a degree, why you want to earn it, how you will earn it, and what you will do with it.

Can I write an autobiography without getting sued?
Q. I want to write an autobiography but there were people in my life that weren't so nice to me. Can any of them sue me if it is the truth but I don't have any proof? Or can I just change their names?

A. You will need to consult with an attorney. Many authors deliberately change names of living people and acknowledge that in a note of forward. You do not want to put yourself in a position where you can be sued for libel.
